07What they want to see

UGCpeopleactuallywatch

Viewers did not ask for another creator holding a product to camera. They asked for a person with a specific problem, in a specific room, saying something they have not already heard.

The phrase 'UGC ad' has been worn smooth. Media buyers say it and mean a talking head with a product in the first three seconds and a code in the caption. Viewers say it and mean something that does not feel like it was made for them to buy. Those are not the same object.

People stay for a person they recognise, in a situation they recognise, doing something slightly wrong or slightly new. They leave the moment the clip announces it is selling. The job is to delay that announcement without lying about what the product is.

Specific beats 'relatable'

Relatable is a mood board word. Specific is a production brief. A 34-year-old in Pune talking about the week her skin broke because she switched moisturisers will outperform a 'skincare girl' in a white kitchen, because the first one is a scene and the second one is a category.

  • A room that looks lived in, not lit for a catalogue.
  • A sentence they might actually say to a friend, including the hedge and the aside.
  • A product that enters because the story needs it, not because the brief demanded a pack shot at 0:03.
  • A face that belongs to the niche: age, city, accent, the small tells of class and taste.

What they do not want to see

They do not want to see a creator who has clearly never used the product. They do not want a hook that could sit on any brand in the aisle. They do not want a caption that restates the voiceover. They especially do not want the same three UGC tropes that every SaaS and every serum ran last quarter: the 'wait for it', the fake stumble, the 'I wasn't going to post this'.

If you could swap the logo and the line still works, the viewer already knows it is an ad. That is the moment they leave.

How we brief it

We start with the category, not the product. What is already in the feed. Which formats are exhausted. Which person, in which room, would be new. Then the product has a job inside that scene: it solves the thing the person was already talking about. That is UGC people watch. The rest is inventory that looks like UGC and performs like a banner.

Or skip the reading and have us run it.
